How Does HydroChute Ensure Contractor Competency?

When it comes to fire safety, particularly in high-rise buildings, contractor competency isn’t optional—it’s essential. But how do you prove it?

At HydroChute, we’ve put a huge amount of thought and effort into this very question.

In our latest Q&A explainer video, Riley Smith explains how we’ve tackled the issue of competency head-on—and what sets us apart in the industry.

The Problem: A Lack of Specific Training

Before the Grenfell tragedy, there was no formal training dedicated specifically to refuse chute fire safety, servicing, or maintenance. While there were general courses available for fire safety and construction, nothing existed that addressed the unique requirements of chute systems.

The Solution: Working with the Building Research Establishment (BRE)

Rather than accept the gap, we took action. We approached the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and asked how we could develop proper training and certification standards for chute-related work.

Together, we created a dedicated course designed to equip our engineers and operatives with chute-specific fire safety knowledge. This training covers:

✅ Refuse chute fire safety principles

    ✅ Correct servicing procedures

✅ Installation and maintenance best practices

    ✅ Certification upon completion

The Result: Competency You Can Trust

Every HydroChute engineer and operative undergoes this specialised training and achieves certification. This forms part of what we call the “golden thread”—a consistent, traceable link from product manufacture through to installation and service.

For clients, this means peace of mind. You can be confident that anyone working on your HydroChute system is not only qualified, but specifically trained in the safety, maintenance, and servicing of chute systems.

  • Bin Chute Hopper Replacement

    Bin Chute Hopper Replacement

A recently completed HydroChute project involved removing damaged bin chute hoppers in a residential building, and replacing them with new 4-hour fire rated hoppers. The existing hoppers failed the smoke test and were not compliant with fire safety regulations.

Chute Hopper Fire Safety Smoke Test

    Why choose HydroChute?

Our hoppers have been furnace tested and have a 4-hour fire rating. They have also gone through rigorous smoke tightness testing. The smoke tests were conducted to the principle of a method specified in BS 476-31.1, which measures the ability of the test specimen to resist the penetration of smoke in the event of a fire. All these tests were carried out by the world’s leading authority on building safety standards: Building Research Establishment (BRE).

  • Fire Safety Bin Chutes Installed in Walsall

Fire Safety Bin Chutes Installed in Walsall

Fire Safety Bin Chutes – WalsallThe FRA identified serious risks at some high rise tower blocks in Walsall. The existing bin chute hoppers were over 50 years old and offered no protection from smoke egress in the event of a fire. Additionally, the hoppers had no self-closing mechanism, leaving residents at risk if the bin chute door was left open.

At the base of each chute, the original manual closure plates were still in place. They had long since rusted in an open position and were not compliant with current fire safety standards for refuse chutes. Bin chute closure plates should automatically close in the event of a fire.

Bringing together our team of qualified assessors, fabricators, and installers, we inspected, measured up, manufactured and fitted new 4hr fire-rated hoppers and fire closure plates in record time!

Manufactured and fitted to BS476 the new hoppers and fire closure plates ensure that the bin chutes are now fully compliant with the latest fire safety standards – safe for at least another 50 years!

Big thanks to all the team at HydroChute. Another brilliant outcome and a very happy client.

ASCP in housing and communities events - Hydrochute deliver training

In October, we had the privilege to support ASCP with their excellent Autumn Technical Meetings.

We were there to provide professional information on judicially admissible inspections, refuse chute fire safety measures and British Standards relating to refuse chutes. Our chief expert, Charles White, delivered talks at four of the five meetings:

    Yorkshire/North East – 10 October
    North West – 11 October
    South East – 17 October
    Midlands/South West – 18 October

It was a great opportunity to catch up with The ASCP Team and the many ASCP members that we are currently working with.
