Waste Recycling
Many people are unaware of the wide range of options available to support waste recycling through building refuse chute systems—from multi-stream hoppers that allow sorting of up to three waste types at the chute, to retrofit solutions like the Waste Streamer that upgrade existing systems for better separation and compliance.

Challenges with Off-Site Waste Storage
While there are effective off-site waste storage solutions available, designed to accommodate multiple waste streams, they often require residents to leave the building. This presents serious challenges for the elderly, infirm, or otherwise vulnerable individuals for whom even short trips outside can be difficult or impossible.
Limitations of On-Site Ground-Level Storage
Even when on-site ground-level storage is provided, the requirement to transport waste through corridors, lifts, or stairwells, particularly in high-rise buildings, can be burdensome and impractical for many residents.
Risks of Inadequate Alternatives
When internal chutes are closed and alternative options are not viable, residents may resort to leaving refuse on landings, creating fire and health hazards. There is simply no substitute for the safety, accessibility, and convenience of an internal, well-designed refuse chute system that includes fire- and smoke-rated features and supports separated recycling streams.
This approach not only promotes better recycling outcomes—it supports inclusive, dignified for all living for all residents.
Waste Recycling in a High Rise Building
Most high-rise buildings have only one refuse chute, making recycling difficult. As a result, recyclable waste often ends up in general waste. With growing pressure to improve recycling, practical solutions are needed.
1. Residents bring their recycling down in the lift and deposit it into a hopper on the 1st floor. The waste is then directed into a secure area below, providing a safe and efficient recycling solution.
2. Residents bring their recycling down in the lift and deposit it through a hatch, which leads directly into a secure four-wheel bin. This simple solution makes recycling more accessible and organised within high-rise buildings.
3. Retrofitting new hoppers with buttons to select the correct waste stream offers a best-in-class solution. At the base of the chute in the bin room our patented waste streamer will deflect waste into the appropriate bin.
4. A dedicated recycling chute is installed on the outside of the building, providing residents with a convenient way to dispose of recyclables separately from general waste.
